BP Spill Update: Endless Spill, Endless Blame

With the Deepwater Horizon oil spill now moving into its second month and no immediate end in sight, BP is (see WSJ story today) attempting to throw Transocean under the bus as responsible for the disaster. Unnamed BP execs point out sections from Transocean's emergency response manual stating that the driller's on-site manager is "fully responsible" for work on the rig.

It's only natural for BP to be trying its best to deflect blame, what with lawmakers falling all over each other for the chance to haul oil execs in front of a show trial. On Tuesday the Senate's Energy and Natural Resources committee will hold a hearing. And the Coast Guard will also hear from BP and Transocean managers who were on the rig at the time of the blast.

How much more useful information will additional hearings be able to glean? It will be good to hear from eyewitnesses, though there's already a host of documents from BP, Transocean, Halliburton, at the website for the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, including the last couple hours of pressure logs from the Macondo well.
