Deepwater Horizon Film Puts Spotlight on Disaster

The motion picture depicting the 2010 Gulf oil spill hits theaters nationwide this weekend.  So what, if anything, has changed since the Deepwater Horizon blast killed 11 oil rig workers?

Attorney Brent Coon represented one of the workers who escaped the rig; he hopes the film brings more attention to what really happened and how little regulation there is in the drilling industry still today.

"At the end of the day, it occurred because people cut corners that they knew they were cutting in order to expedite the completion of the job," says Coon.

"That will probably always occur in this industry until the penalties for doing so are more severe."

Though BP has paid out billions in relief, Coon says many cases are still unresolved.  He also says the company was not held accountable for the deaths of its workers.

"To allow them to walk their probation on that and allow it to expire, when they keep doing worse and worse things, it’s not a proper example to set in the industry, in my opinion," says Coon.

He says the release of nearly five million barrels of oil still impacts the Gulf.
