Government slams BP over Gulf cleanup assessment

March 18, 2015, 9:27 am

BP says the Gulf of Mexico is returning to normal, with the data not indicating any long-term damage to fish and bird populations and the area affected by the oil shrinking rapidly.

But the company's conclusion is attacked by U.S. government agency NOAA for misinterpreting and misapplying data in arguing that the health of the Gulf has recovered faster than expected.

The clash is a sign of the still acrimonious relationship between BP and U.S. government bodies over the legacy of the spill; more important, conclusions about the recovery could affect both the penalties BP faces under the Clean Water Act - as much as $13.7B - and on the natural resources damages the company must pay following a separate process.
